Neuroscience Intensive Care Fellowship

The University of Mississippi Medical Center Neuroscience Intensive Care Fellowship Program is accepting applications for fellowship years to begin July 1, 2019 (out of match) and July 1, 2020 (SF match).

Prerequisite

  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited residency program in neurology, anesthesia, emergency medicine or internal medicine

About the intensive care program

University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (NSICU) offers the state’s most extensive care for patients with potentially life-threatening brain and central nervous system conditions, such as massive stroke, bleeding in and around the brain, brain tumors or trauma, severe seizures and spinal cord disorders, as well as those recovering from neurosurgery.

The dedicated, experienced staff includes the only five board-certified neuro-intensivists in the state, a neuro-anesthesia specialist, vascular neurologist, neurosurgeons, endovascular specialists, epileptologist, fellow, 24-hour nurse practitioners and specialized neuroscience nurses. Direct care on the dedicated 20-bed unit is provided by a highly trained, experienced team. The UMMC NSICU functions as a closed-collaborative unit with the participation of a multidisciplinary team of pharmacists, case coordinators and social workers, chaplains, palliative care and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialists in addition to the NSICU staff.

Rotators include residents, medical students and observers. Procedures offered include but are not limited to Intracranial Pressure monitoring, Transcranial Doppler Ultrasonography, Continuous EEG, Single Proton Emission CT (SPECT), Diffusion Tensor Imaging, Invasive Hemodynamic Monitoring, cerebral angiography, thrombolysis, plasmapheresis, hypothermia and phrenic nerve pacing.

About the fellowship program

The UMMC NSICU is offering 1 available position each for a 2-year United Council of Neurological Subspecialty accredited fellowship starting July 1, 2019, and July 1, 2020.

The fellow will participate in bedside rounds, performing procedures, weekly conferences, teaching and didactics. During off-service weeks, it is the expectation that the fellow will participate in scholarly activities and will have a research output at the end of 2 years. The fellow will have the opportunity to perform external ventricular drains under the supervision of Neurosurgery. We offer flexible non-neuro ICU rotations and various electives tailored to the fellows needs.
